Pictures from the scene show that the damaged bus is lying on the banks of a river and debris and personal belongings are scattered all around. Police and rescue workers searched the incident site. President Dina Bolwart, in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, expressed her condolences to the loved ones of the victims. Last month, 13 people were killed and five were seriously injured in an accident in the same area.
Accidents occur frequently on Peruvian highways due to high speeds, poor road conditions, lack of signage, and poor enforcement of traffic rules.
