CJI Chandrachud said that I do not know how Ram Jethmalani would have reacted to these reforms. In keeping with his temperamental nature, he would give further suggestions to improve the efficiency of the courts. But it is certain that Ram and Ratna (Ram’s wife) and my father, mother Yashwant and Prabha will be watching from the stars.

On the death anniversary of Ram Jethmalani, CJI said, “It has been a great honor to remember the legacy of Ram Jethmalani, one of the greatest people of our times.” CJI Chandrachud became emotional while saying all this. He worked with Ram Jethmalani as a lawyer. Recalled his appearance in Bombay High Court. CJI Ram Jethmalani was speaking on the occasion of birth centenary memorial.

CJI DY Chandrachud said that the true tribute to a person like Ram Jethmalani is that we too remain alert and be a part of the change in those systems. The way I see it, they just weren’t concerned about what they found. They were more interested in whether they left it better than what they found.

CJI said that today’s topic is the basic structure principle. Although I admire Jethmalani a lot, there is one thing I would not like to share with him. That is their ability to give rise to controversies. My aim is to institutionalize the courts. The Center for Research and Planning is in the process of creating a system for management and reduction of pending cases. One of the criticisms of the collegium is that the people we are considering for appointment. We have no factual data to evaluate them.

The CJI said that with the help of the Center of Research and Planning, we have prepared a comprehensive platform where we have assessed the top 50 judges of the country who will be considered for appointment to the SC. The idea is to make the process of recommending appointments to the Supreme Court more transparent. Not by sharing our discussions in the public domain, which we obviously cannot do. But my focus is also on reducing barriers to access to courts by setting objective criteria for selection in SC and HC, improving the gender ratio of lawyers, ensuring that lawyers and litigants get comfortable rest in the court.

CJI DY Chandrachud said that if I have to do something about this principle, I will have to do it through my judgment and not through a declaration outside the court. Yesterday we launched the National Judicial Data Grid, which will provide real-time tracking of disposal and pending cases with a single click. During this, former CJI Deepak Mishra, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and others also expressed their views.
