MS Swaminathan, a renowned agricultural scientist and an important contributor to the country’s ‘Green Revolution’, passed away on Thursday. He was 98 years old. There are three daughters in his family. Sources in MS Swaminathan Research Foundation said that he was undergoing treatment for age related diseases for some time.
PM Modi expressed grief
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed grief over the demise of renowned agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan and also said that his unprecedented contribution in the agriculture sector changed the lives of millions of people and ensured food security for the nation. Paying tribute to Swaminathan, the Prime Minister said that his passion to see India progress was exemplary and his life and work will continue to inspire generations to come.
Modi said in a series of posts on ‘X’, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Dr MS Swaminathan. At a very critical period in our country’s history, his unprecedented contribution to agriculture transformed the lives of millions and ensured food security for our nation.
Swaminathan had received many awards
In 1987, Professor Swaminathan was awarded the first World Food Prize. Which is seen as the highest honor in the field of agriculture. He also received many other awards. These include the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1971 and the Albert Einstein World Prize for Science in 1986. Professor Swaminathan was named by Time magazine as one of the twenty most influential Asian people of the 20th century.
His wife Meena Swaminathan passed away last year. His daughter Soumya Swaminathan has been the chief scientist of the World Health Organization. There was a lot of discussion about his work during Corona.
