Neither scored runs, nor took wickets, yet this player was included in the World Cup 2023 team, made a place by setting!
World Cup 2023: The Indian team for the ODI World Cup 2023 was announced on 5 September. Suryakumar Yadav was selected in the 15-member team despite his poor performance in ODIs, while Yuzvendra Chahal and Sanju Samson were not selected despite their good figures in the ODI format. After the announcement of the World Cup 2023 team, these three names remained in the headlines. A player has been selected in Team India who may not even get a place in the playing XI. Let us know about this player…
Selection to tour with Team India
The selection of all-rounder Axar Patel in the Indian team for the World Cup (World Cup 2023) has been quite surprising. Despite Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja not getting a place in the playing XI, yet players like Yuzvendra Chahal have been dropped in Team India and given a chance. According to the kind of playing XI that Team India is likely to have in the World Cup, Akshar will only get to travel with the team.
Hint found in Asia Cup
Akshar Patel is also included in Team India which went to play Asia Cup in Sri Lanka but he is not able to get a place in the playing XI. He did not get a place in the Indian team in the first and second matches against Pakistan and against Nepal. Shardul Thakur got the place. When Bumrah returned to India, Mohammed Shami also got a chance to play but Akshar did not get it. It is clear from this that playing in the World Cup (World Cup 2023) may still remain a dream for him.
Anyway, Akshar’s batting average in ODI is 18 while in bowling he has taken 58 wickets in 52 matches. In the last 10 ODI matches, Akshar Patel has scored only 1 half-century while he has not been able to reach double digits 6 times. His performance on the West Indies tour has also been disappointing. Despite this, his selection in the World Cup team is surprising.
Chahal becomes better option
Despite Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel did not have a place in the team. He bowls with his left hand but with Kuldeep and Jadeja, he would not be able to get a place. It would have been better if an additional spinner in the form of Yuzvendra Chahal was included in the Indian team in his place. There is no right arm spinner in the Indian team. Chahal could have been a better option for India. He has taken 121 wickets in 72 ODIs.
