Nuclear Testing Facility: Due to tensions between countries, the threat of a nuclear attack seems to be looming around the world. Meanwhile, a study has revealed something that can increase the tension in the world. The study revealed that In recent years, China, Russia and the United States have built new plants and dug tunnels at their nuclear test sites.
CNN has obtained some satellite images that show plants and tunnels. Although there is no evidence that Russia, the United States, or China are preparing nuclear tests, images from the Non-Proliferation Study show a recent expansion of the three nuclear test zones compared to a few years ago.
The first picture includes Xinjiang, the most western region of China, the second picture includes Russia’s Arctic Ocean archipelago and the third picture includes America’s Nevada desert.
New tunnels, new roads and storage facilities
Jeffrey Lewis, an assistant professor at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, told CNN that satellite images from the past three to five years show new tunnels, new roads and storage facilities beneath the mountains. He further said, “We are actually seeing a number of signs that suggest that Russia, China and the United States may resume nuclear testing.”
Jeffrey Lewis said that none of these countries have done so since underground nuclear testing was banned under the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). China and the United States have signed the treaty, but have not ratified it.
According to CNN, Retired US Air Force Colonel Cedric Leighton has reviewed photographs of the nuclear plants of the three powers and he also believes that these countries can conduct nuclear tests. He said, ‘It is very clear that all three countries, Russia, China and the US, have invested a lot of time, effort and money not only in modernizing their nuclear plants but also in preparing the activities necessary for testing.
