With the 2024 elections approaching, India Alliance parties across the country are continuously raising the demand for caste census, which the BJP is not in favor of. However, BJP is continuously trying to neutralize this demand. Jankar believes that BJP hopes to strengthen its hold on OBCs by wooing artisans and craftsmen from extremely backward community through Vishwakarma Yojana.
Experts say the announcement of the Vishwakarma scheme by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address also appears to be a strategy of the BJP for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. After the formation of the India alliance, the BJP may face the challenge of getting the support of larger and more powerful OBC groups in North India through big OBC leaders Akhilesh Yadav, Lalu Prasad, Tejashwi Yadav, Nitish Kumar and Bhupesh Baghel. Therefore, the party is now making every possible effort to consolidate the support of many small but numerically large backward groups like Lohars, Barhais, Kahars, Barbers and Dhobis. The population of extremely backward people can be around 30 percent.
BJP has been eyeing the support of artisan castes or Most Backward Castes (MBC) for some time. This is why the Prime Minister emphasized that the Vishwakarma Yojana will help traditional artisans, especially the OBC community.
