A 66-year-old Sikh man was injured in a fight after a car accident in New York City, America. He suffered a serious head injury due to which he died. Last Thursday, 30-year-old Gilbert Augustin attacked Jasmer Singh after a minor collision with a vehicle in Queens. This was the second incident of attack on a Sikh person in New York in the last one week.
There was a dispute after the car collided
New Your Daily News reports that the cars of Jasmer Singh and Augustin collided with each other last Thursday, leaving scratches on both the vehicles. During this time, as Singh tried to call 911, the person sitting in the other car allegedly said, “No police, no police.” Then he snatched his phone. According to the report, Singh got out of the car and chased Augustin in an attempt to get his phone back.
During this, there was an argument between the two and Jasmer Singh immediately took his phone from Augustin and sat in the car. Angered by this, Augustin punched Singh thrice on the head and face.
Hospitalized in critical condition, death
Jasmer Singh fell on the ground due to Augustin’s forceful attack and suffered serious head injuries. After this Augustin fled from the scene. According to reports, Singh was taken to the hospital in a critical condition, where he died due to brain injury.
New York City Mayor condemns attack on Jasmer Singh
New York City Mayor Eric Adams condemned the attack on Jasmer Singh and expressed his commitment to ensuring the safety of the community. Mayor Adams said on social media platform ‘X’, “Jasmer Singh loved this city and deserved so much before his tragic death. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I want our Sikh community to know that we have more than just our condolences for you. “Our commitment to you is that we reject the hatred that took this innocent life and we will protect you.”
Augustin was detained after being convicted
According to the New York Daily News, police from the 102nd Precinct of the New York Police Department have accused Augustin of murder and assault. Augustin is being held in custody after his arraignment in Queens on Saturday, the report said.
Last week a Sikh youth was attacked in New York
Further, the report said that last week a 19-year-old Sikh youth was attacked in New York when he was going to Gurudwara in Richmond Hill by bus. Christopher Filippo, 26, had punched the man in the back of the head, tried to take off his turban and told him, “We don’t wear that (turban) in this country.”
