Supreme Court Refuses To Entertain Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Plea Against ED Summons In Money Laundering Case
Hemant Soren Case: The Supreme Court on Monday (September 18) refused to hear the petition of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Hemant had reached the Supreme Court against the summons of ED in the money laundering case. The Supreme Court asked him to first go to the Jharkhand High Court. Hemant Soren was called by ED to its Ranchi office for questioning in the land scam, but he has not gone there yet.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Soren, claimed in the apex court that this is a case of complete lagging behind. On this, the bench of Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Bela M Trivedi said, “Rohatgi ji, why don’t you go to the High Court?” No no, you go to the High Court. We will allow you to withdraw the petition.” The petition was dismissed as withdrawn.
What did ED say?
Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the ED, argued that this case comes under a large number of judgments. Soren has moved the top court challenging the summons sent to him to appear at the federal agency’s office in Ranchi on August 14 and record his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Earlier, Soren had not served the ED summons in the alleged defense land scam case citing pre-scheduled programmes. The ED had questioned Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Soren (48) for more than nine hours on November 17 last year in a money laundering case related to alleged illegal mining in the state.
What is the matter?
The central agency is probing over a dozen land deals, including one related to defense land, in which a group of mafia, middlemen and bureaucrats allegedly colluded to create fake documents dating back to 1932 Was.
The ED has so far arrested many people in Jharkhand, including Soren’s political aide Pankaj Mishra. Soren was initially summoned by the ED on November 3, 2022, but he did not appear before it citing government commitments. The JMM leader had also challenged the Central Investigation Agency to arrest him and requested to postpone the summons for three weeks.
